My name is Allysen Kikumoto. I am currently pursuing my Master of Arts in Teaching in K-12 Special Education Licensure at Chaminade University of Honolulu. In 2012, I obtained a Bachelors of Science degree in Human Development and Family Studies, specializing in Child and Adolescent Development with a minor in Developmental Disabilities.
Through the course of my undergrad, I discovered my love for working with people with disabilities. As a part of one of my courses, we were required to volunteer in the community working with people with disabilities. I chose to volunteer at an arts and movement center, where I taught dance classes. This is where I found my passion for teaching. From that point I decided I wanted to be the person in my student's lives to show them how awesome they each are. I want to inspire my students to be the best person they can be! My passion for teaching grew tremendously when I moved home after my undergrad and got a position as an Educational Assistant. Being in the classroom for the past two and half years only reaffirmed my passion and love for the teaching field.
While in high school, I was known for being the “misguided” student. I was disruptive and insubordinate. As I grew up, I realized the value of education and how I had taken it for granted by being horrible to my teachers. Knowing this, I am now able to empathize with my students who cannot see the value of education, yet. Through my own experiences in school, I am able to show them how being disruptive hinders not only their education, but also the education of others around them. This is why I am currently pursuing my dream in becoming a positive and effective special education high school teacher.
